At least 10 people have been killed after they were involved in a road accident at Chabera along the Kisii–Kisumu highway.
The grisly accident which occurred on Sunday, December 14, night involved two lorries and a private van.
Several others were injured in the accident and were rushed to different health facilities in the area.
Preliminary reports indicate that the private van was carrying a family who were travelling to Nyamaiya in Nyamira County after attending a wedding in Kakamega County.
In a statement after the accident, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga extended her condolences to the families who lost their kin.
Governor Wanga also directed all county emergency services to provide full support to the injured and bereaved families
“I have directed all county emergency services to coordinate with national authorities for rescue operations and to provide full support to the injured and bereaved families. A thorough investigation into the cause is underway.
“To the families grieving and the injured fighting for their lives, together with the people of Homa Bay, we stand with you,” she stated.
The ODM Governor also urged road users to exercise extreme caution and stay safe while on the road.
Meanwhile, 28 people have been injured after an Easy Coach bus collided with a trailer near Salgaa along the Nakuru-Mau Summit road in Nakuru County.
Kenya Red Cross confirmed the accident on Monday, December 15, morning and noted that Response teams were deployed to the scene, managing the situation.
In an update, the organisation reported that 28 people were injured, with 12 in critical condition taken to the hospital, while 16 others were treated at the scene.
“Update: 28 injured, 12 in critical condition, were taken to the hospital, while 16 casualties were attended to at the scene. Kenya Red Cross, alongside a multi-agency response team, responded to the incident. Scene clearance by the police is ongoing,” Kenya Red Cross stated.
The two accidents came a day after 8 members of the same family were killed in a road accident near Ekerenyo in Nyamira County along the Kericho-Nyamira highway.
The accident, which occurred on the night of Saturday, December 13, involved a 14-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) shuttle belonging to Quarser Sacco and a trailer.
The trailer was travelling from Ekerenyo while the shuttle was coming from Ikonge when they collided head-on.
In a statement after the accident, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo said the county deployed emergency teams to the scene to help the injured passengers.
Governor Nyaribo also extended his condolences to the families who lost their kin in the tragic accident.
“I have learnt with deep shock of the tragic road accident at Ri’Arani, Ekerenyo Ward- along Kisii Chemosit Road-, which has tonight claimed lives and left others with injuries.
“Our teams at the Nyamira County Referral Hospital are working around the clock to save those who were injured. My utmost condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones,” said Governor Nyaribo.
