11 Senators To Decide Governor Mwangaza’s Fate 

The Senate has approved the creation of a select committee to investigate the impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. 

33 Senators had previously voted against 2 in favor of a committee approach. No Senator abstained the vote. 

Senate Minority Leader Stewart Madzayo and Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot made the motion to have the committee look into Governor Mwangaza.

The Senators are; Boni Khalwale (Kakamega), Jackson Mandago (Uasin Gishu), Karungo Thangwa (Kiambu), Esther Okenyuri (Nominated), Ali Roba (Mandera), Peris Tobiko (Nominated), Gicheru Oketch (Migori), Joseph Kamau (Lamu), Edwin Sifuna (Nairobi), Agnes Kavindu (Machakos) and Johnes Mwaruma (Taita Taveta). 

Senate speaker Amason Kingi ordered the report to be tabled by 30th December 2022.  

Governor Mwangaza is accused of nepotism, making illegitimate appointments, removing county officials from their positions without authority, and violating the constitution.

These charges specifically state that her husband was appointed to county positions and that county employees at Timau, Nkubu, and Kianjae were appointed by the side of the road.

She charged MCAs with corruption, blackmail, avarice, intimidation, and cartel behavior. The ward lawmakers were charged by Governor Mwangaza with orchestrating violent protests at Assembly meetings and breaking the law regarding public financing.
