JSC: 117 Magistrates Promoted in Major Service Overhaul

Kenya’s Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has announced the immediate promotion of 117 judicial officers, marking a significant step towards bolstering the country’s legal system.

The promotions, ratified during commission meetings on 11 and 15 September, follow rigorous interviews conducted between 4 and 13 August.

The move aims to expand territorial and pecuniary jurisdiction, enabling officers to handle more complex and high-value cases.

It also seeks to enhance efficiency in service delivery and reward high-performing staff, fostering career progression within the judiciary.

Among the promoted are nine to the position of chief magistrate, including Hon Kimilu Esther Kalunde and Hon Macharia James Muriuki. Fifteen have advanced to senior principal magistrate, such as Hon Masiga James Jesse and Hon Lewa Lillian Tsuma.

A substantial 44 officers now hold the rank of senior principal magistrate, with names like Hon Kipkorir Charity Cheruto and Hon Nthuku Judicaster Nthambi featuring prominently.

The list extends to principal magistrates, including Hon Shimenga Maureen Iberia and Hon Bi Japheth Cheruiyot.

In the kadhi courts, which handle Islamic law matters, 15 have been elevated to senior principal kadhi, including Hon Hussein Ishaq Abdijulbar and Hon Mwaito Salim Juma. Four more advance to principal kadhi, such as Hon Ahmed Isaack Maalim.

The JSC, in a statement signed by secretary Winfridah B Mokaya, congratulated the officers for their dedication.
