Twelve of fifteen individuals arrested in connection with a July 1, 2025, arson and property destruction incident have been released by the Thika Law Courts after investigators failed to produce sufficient evidence against them.
Appearing before Senior Resident Magistrate Diana Milimu, the prosecution admitted that investigations did not establish any direct link between the twelve suspects and the alleged crimes.
Police Constable Nyamweya, the lead investigator, informed the court that after a 14-day probe, the suspects who had been held at Ngoliba Police Station were found to have no involvement.
Magistrate Milimu ordered the immediate release of the twelve, ruling that there was no legal basis to continue detaining them.
“The case is hereby closed unless any of the accused persons is otherwise lawfully held,” she stated.
The freed suspects expressed relief and gratitude to the court, some referring to the ruling as a “pardon” and celebrating their restored freedom outside the courthouse.
However, the case remains partially open. The remaining three suspects, believed to have a stronger connection to the incident, were separately arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts, where they face terrorism-related charges.
They are currently being held at Kamiti Maximum Prison, with hearings set to continue.
Authorities have not disclosed the exact nature of the original offenses, but the ongoing investigations suggest a broader probe into the July 1 events. Further updates are expected as the case develops.
