120 traffic officers transferred over illegal roadblocks

More than 120 traffic officers have been moved in changes occasioned by various issues including disciplinary matters. While making the changes, the officials said that the officers were moved to the general duties with an aim of streamlining their operations in the country.

The changes were communicated through an internal memo in the service dated January 27 which listed the officers affected. The officers who were reshuffled are from Narok, Kajiado, Baringo, West Pokot, Bomet, Nandi, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, Laikipia and Kericho counties.

The changes were made after warnings from police headquarters on the traffic police to keep off manning static roadblocks on the highways. The Inspector General of the Police Hilary Mutyambai, said that these roadblocks are used as money minting stations and therefore he wants only mobile checks to be in place.

On Tuesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta said that police officers are not enemies to the public and urged every Kenyan to obey the laws and cooperate with them in all ways to ensure safety for all. “Police officers are not enemies, they are our friends. It is upon us as citizens to obey the law and do what we are directed to do in line with the law. If we continue that way, I am confident that our nation will be safe and prosperous,” he said.
