Acting Director-General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth revealed that the government plans to vaccine at least 13 million Kenyans against Coronavirus sickness by December this year.
According to Amoth, the ministry has placed an order for 13 million single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccines, which should arrive in the country soon.
He said the vaccination was more effective than the two-shot AstraZeneca vaccine that had been ordered previously.
The acting DG was addressing at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sh4.5 billion Billy Graham Memorial Cardiothoracic Centre at Tenwek Mission Hospital in Bomet.
The 174-bed surgical and training facility will also have 52 intensive care units, post-anesthesia units, six major operating theaters, cauterization suits, five endoscopic rooms, and an outpatient clinic.
Dr. Robert Langat, the Hospital’s Board Chairman, stated that the hospital plans to undertake 2,000 major heart and chest procedures, as well as thousands of endoscopies and cauterizations.
According to Langat, the institution has done over 2,000 heart surgeries since 2008, with over 650 cases currently on the waiting list.
Amoth further claimed that approximately 4, 000 children are born each year with heart-related disorders.
