Kenyan Premier League giants Gor Mahia FC have attracted massive interest in their search for a new head coach, with 148 coaches formally applying for the vacant position, including several Europe-based tacticians and former club handlers.

According to club officials, the head coach vacancy is just one of eight key positions that drew a total of 539 applications by the July 10 deadline. Other roles include assistant coach, team manager, goalkeeper coach, team doctor, physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach, and Chief Executive Officer.

After an initial vetting, 311 applications were deemed valid. Disqualifications were attributed to incomplete submissions, language barriers, lack of requisite qualifications, and duplicate entries.

Gor Mahia Secretary General Nick Arum confirmed that the evaluation process is in progress, with a final shortlist of 247 candidates being considered across all positions. “We have reviewed all the submissions and will be considering 247 qualified applications following another round of review. Time is of the essence, we must begin our pre-season preparations in time without delay,” said Arum.

Out of the total, 21 candidates applied for the assistant coach role. Arum noted that while the club is keen to bring in the best talent, financial feasibility will influence the final decisions. “Some applicants may have expectations beyond what the club can accommodate on matters salary,” he said.

Sources reveal that among the applicants are two former Gor Mahia head coaches and three ex-AFC Leopards tacticians, signaling a potential return of familiar faces to the Kenyan football scene.

As Gor Mahia continues its restructuring, including the recruitment of five new players, the club is expected to unveil its new technical bench in the coming days to ensure a seamless start to pre-season preparations ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
