Police in Migori are investigating the death of a 15 year old boy who died by suicide at his family home on Sunday morning following a disagreement with his mother, authorities said.
According to a police report filed at Migori Police Station, the incident was reported at about 12.30pm on December 14 by the boy’s father, Ayub Odhiambo Odiero. The teenager, a pupil at Otacho Primary School, was last seen alive at around 10.50am after he was denied permission by his mother to go to church.
Family members later discovered his body within the homestead. Officers from Migori Police Station, accompanied by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Suna East, visited and processed the scene.
“Officers from Migori and DCI Suna East visited the scene and established the said juvenile had committed suicide,” the police report said. Scene of Crime personnel documented the area before the body was removed to Migori County Hospital mortuary, where it is being preserved pending a post mortem examination.
Detectives from DCI Suna East are continuing investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death. Police said no arrests have been made and that inquiries are ongoing.
Mental health advocates have repeatedly warned that young people may struggle to process emotional distress and that seemingly ordinary disagreements can sometimes have tragic outcomes.
Child protection experts urge parents and guardians to take emotional warning signs seriously and to seek support when children appear withdrawn or distressed. Schools, faith institutions and community leaders are also being encouraged to strengthen counselling and peer support systems for young people.
Anyone experiencing emotional distress or having thoughts of self harm is encouraged to seek help. In Kenya, support is available through local health facilities, trusted community leaders and mental health helplines. Speaking to someone can make a difference.
The investigation remains open as authorities work to piece together the events that led to the teenager’s death.
