Tharaka Nithi County has promoted 21 medical consultants from Job Group Q to S in a move hailed by the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) as a significant milestone for the county’s healthcare sector.

According to KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Atellah, 11 doctors have already received their promotion letters this May, with the remaining 10 set to receive theirs in June. He noted that the promotions are a direct outcome of the Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) signed on May 8, 2025, and stem from crucial deliberations with the Council of Governors on April 25.

Dr. Atellah praised Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki for his hands-on approach to leadership, emphasizing that the promotions were executed without delays or bureaucratic hurdles. “What sets this achievement apart is the decisive and efficient leadership of Governor Muthomi Njuki, who bypassed unnecessary bureaucracy, no job advertisements, no interviews, just action,” he stated.

He likened Njuki’s swift action to similar efforts by Governors Stephen Sang of Nandi and Mutahi Kahiga of Nyeri, who undertook comparable promotions in 2023.

The union has now urged other counties to emulate Tharaka Nithi’s example, arguing that timely promotions are essential to motivating healthcare professionals and enhancing public service delivery.

“This is the kind of leadership our healthcare system needs, one that respects, empowers, and uplifts the very professionals it depends on. When doctors are valued, healthcare delivery flourishes,” Dr. Atellah affirmed. “We celebrate this win and call on other counties to follow suit. Our doctors deserve no less.”
