Three people were killed and at least 19 others injured on Sunday following a road accident at Otonglo, near the Molasses Plant in Kisumu.
The incident involved the motorcade of Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, who had earlier attended a thanksgiving ceremony for Health Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga in Rarieda.
Duale’s motorcade struck a matatu and tuktuk along Kisumu-Busia Highway as he travelled from Rarieda to Kisumu International Airport.
“Immediate rescue efforts were coordinated, leading to the evacuation of more than 19 injured persons to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent medical attention,” the ministry said in a statement Sunday.
Authorities said two people were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third victim died while being transported to the hospital.
Emergency responders, local authorities, and medical teams quickly mobilized to rescue those trapped and transfer the injured to the hospital for treatment.
The Ministry of Health expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished those receiving treatment a swift recovery.
The cause of the accident was not immediately disclosed, and authorities said investigations into the incident are ongoing.
