A 30-kilometer fence being erected at the Maasai Mau forest is nearly complete.Â
The installation of an electric fence in a section of the Mau forest, which began in March 2021, would cost Sh73.8 million and will safeguard the forest from any human activities.
Narok South Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Felix Kisalu says the forest will also be protected by a network of CCTV cameras.
The DCC stated that they had completed the most difficult portion of the project, which included erecting poles and installing an electric fence, and were now working on the second phase, which included installing solar-powered CCTV cameras.
He explained that they chose solar energy because it was more reliable than electricity, which frequently fails.
“We will be monitoring all actions taking place across the forest to eliminate any charcoal burners, illegal loggers, and poachers,” the DCC stated.
Kisalu went on to say that the government has hired 20 community scouts to keep an eye on the forest property and prevent it from being destroyed.
Over 35,000 forest dwellers were evicted in 2019, and the government was able to reclaim over 40,000 hectares of forest land.
