Thirty-three residents of Nyakeore Village in Nyamira South Sub-County are recuperating at the Nyamira County Teaching and Referral Hospital after suffering acute food poisoning linked to the meat of a dead cow.
According to the Nyamira County Health Department, the victims fell ill after consuming the contaminated meat on Wednesday. A county disease surveillance team was immediately dispatched to the area, evacuating the patients to hospital where they were stabilised.
“Currently, all the 33 are in stable condition after receiving treatment,” the Health Department confirmed.
Authorities say a joint team of public health and veterinary officers will visit Nyakeore on Friday to conduct further investigations, including contact tracing and case finding, to prevent any secondary infections.
The county government has urged residents to exercise maximum caution regarding the consumption of meat products.
“We call on the people of Nyakeore and surrounding areas to report any cases of suspected food poisoning related to meat,” read a joint statement from the Departments of Health and Agriculture.
The incident highlights ongoing public health risks in rural communities where consumption of meat from uninspected or dead animals remains common despite government warnings.
