2022: IEBC Puts Spending Limit On Politicians

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has published a Gazette Notice setting limits on how much money political candidates and parties can spend in their 2022 campaigns.

A presidential contender will be allowed to spend a maximum of Ksh.4.4 billion for their 2022 campaigns, according to a Gazette Notice issued August 9, 2021.

Those seeking gubernatorial, senatorial, or woman representative seats must adhere to strict spending limits, with Turkana County having the highest restriction at Ksh.123 million, followed by Nairobi (Ksh.117 million), and Marsabit (Ksh.117 million) (114 million).

The lowest expenditure limit is Ksh.21 million in Lamu County, followed by Ksh.23 million in Tharaka Nithi and Ksh.23 million in Elgeyo Marakwet (Ksh.25 million). The gazette notice also sets expenditure limitations for those seeking jobs in the National Assembly and County Assembly.

The spending cap is determined by the region’s geographical size and population.

Political parties would be able to spend up to Ksh.17 billion on advertising.

Among the approved things or activities for which a political party may incur campaign expenses include paying for locations where campaigns may be held, campaign promotional material, campaign workers, transportation, and any other legitimate expenses.
