Maendeleo Ya Wanawake Organization (MYWO) Kilifi County chairperson Witness Tsuma has decried the rising number of teen pregnancies.
Mrs. Tsuma said the status quo had curtailed efforts by girls to continue with their education and meeting their life goals.
Speaking at Lenga dispensary in Kambe, Rabai Sub County, when she presented utensils for women who had recently given birth, Ms Tsuma an educationist by profession said the society must learn from this trend and come up with solutions.
“It is disheartening that our girls continue to drop out of school after getting pregnancies yet the society looks down on them. This is the time the society must arise to the fact and give way to the vulnerable girls in the society,” she said.
Ms Tsuma donated basins and other utensils for mothers at the dispensary and urged them to come up with business plans that she can take to several donors for assistance.
“Getting children at a tender age might be challenging but it’s not an end to life. You still have a whole life to live and you must live it fully, embrace hope and continue to pursue your dreams,” she said.
Ms Tsuma is eyeing the Kilifi County Woman Rep seat in the next year General Election.
She said Kilifi still records big numbers of girls getting pregnancies at a tender age but said the trend must be fully addressed to secure a future generation filled with hope and success.
“I think time has come now for leaders to stand firm, get to the root cause of these problems and find a long-lasting solution. These cases are many we don’t want again to remain a laughing stock. Action must start now,” she said during an interview with Uzalendo News at Kambe.
Kilifi County has been in the news all for wrong reasons including the escalating cases of teen pregnancies and young mothers going through hardships to meet their demands of life.
Poverty and hunger have been blamed as the root cause of these challenges.
