At least five people have been killed following a tragic road accident in the Kibirigwi area on the Sagana-Karatina road in Kirinyaga County.
The incident, which occurred on the morning of Friday, November 22, involved a lorry carrying bags of maize and two private vehicles.
Eyewitnesses recounted how a trailer lost control and rammed into two vehicles at Kibirigwi area.
A police report indicates that a lorry carrying bags of maize lost control while traveling towards Sagana and collided with two private vehicles heading in the opposite direction towards Karatina.
Kirinyaga West Sub-county Police Commander Moses Koskei confirmed that investigations are underway to establish the cause of the crash, adding that the lorry driver also sustained injuries.
Local residents said the lorry was speeding when it overturned, scattering numerous bags of maize across the road.
In a widely circulated video on social media, police officers and residents were seen working together to rescue the occupants of the vehicles involved in the accident.
While some residents actively participated in the rescue efforts, others stood at a distance, observing as their neighbors assisted those injured at the scene.
The bodies of those who perished in the accident were taken to Kerugoya Mortuary where they await identification.
