6.1 Million Hypertension patients at risk of Covid-19, Health ministry says

The Health ministry has penned about 6.1 million adults who live with hypertension, warning them to adhere to health protocols set to fight coronavirus – By Gerald Gekara.

This is due to the high fatalities recorded, of patients with underlying conditions.

The Kenya Health Information System January to March 2020 data from 21 reporting counties on hypertension indicate that a total of 67,465 hypertensive patients were seen & reported.

“The majority of the people who have succumbed to COVID-19, had underlying disease conditions, such as diabetes and hypertension. These are Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), whose burden to the health system is on the rise.” Health CAS Dr. Rashid Aman said.

In his daily address, the CAS confirmed 268 people tested positive, out of a sample size of 2,704.

Kenya’s coronavirus cases now stand at 6,941 out of the 176,059 cumulative samples.

In the recent statistics, Nairobi recorded 175 cases, Mombasa (28), , Busia (18), Kiambu (11), Kajiado (9), Migori (9), Uasin Gishu (8), Machakos (6), Narok (2), Makueni (1), & Muranga (1).

3 more people have since recovered from the virus, further raising Kenya’s death toll to 152.

However, 20 patients have recovered from the coronavirus, further pushing the total number of recoveries to 2,109.
