7 rescued alive after floodwaters sweep lorry into river in Makueni

The Red Cross has confirmed that seven people were rescued alive after a loaded lorry carrying an unknown number of passengers was swept away while attempting to cross the flooded Muswii River in Makueni County, Kenya.

The survivors were taken to the Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital.

In videos posted on Friday, the loaded lorry, which appears to be carrying ballast and several passengers, loses control and succumbs to the river’s pressure.

The passengers can be seen getting swept downstream.

Traffic on the Kasikeu-Sultan Hamud road was halted after the river, which originates in neighbouring Kajiado County, overflowed its banks.

Rescue and recovery efforts are underway.
