The government has confirmed that fake fertiliser is being distributed to farmers across the country.
The confirmation, issued on Friday, April 5, came amid doublespeak and confusion about the presence and distribution of substandard fertiliser.
While confirming the presence of substandard fertiliser, the Ministry of Agriculture issued a directive urging farmers to stop using three fertiliser brands supplied by KEL Chemicals after failed tests by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).
Following Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi’s initial dismissal of allegations regarding the quality of fertiliser distribution as mere propaganda, the government has now confirmed the fertiliser’s substandard nature.
Despite Linturi’s previous stance defending the distribution process’s integrity, recent developments have necessitated a reassessment of the situation.
The confirmation of substandard fertiliser distribution follows the National Development Implementation Committee’s (NDIC) directive issued on Friday, March 29.
The committee, chaired by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, met for its first meeting of the year and expressed concern about the issue.
