Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) invested a total of Sh197.9 billion in various charitable areas across Kenya last financial year, according to the Annual NGO Sector Report 2022/2023.
This marks a Sh12.4 billion increase compared to the previous year.
The report was launched yesterday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) by Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, who commended the partnership between NGOs and the government on development issues. The launch also coincided with the kickoff of NGOs Week 2024, themed “Building Synergy for a Sustainable Future.”
PS Omollo highlighted the crucial role NGOs play in driving sustainable development and addressing pressing social challenges. He specifically praised their collaboration with National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs) during recent floods, where NGOs provided essential relief supplies to affected communities.
However, the PS expressed concern that only 2,828 out of 12,000 registered NGOs filed their annual reports as required by law. This lack of reporting hinders a clear understanding of the sector’s true economic contribution. PS Omollo directed the PBO Authority to take action against non-compliant NGOs, including potential deregistration.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing an enabling environment for NGOs through the implementation of the PBO Act. This act aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and efficiency within the NGO sector.
Mwambu Mabongah, Chair of the PBO Authority, urged NGOs to redouble their efforts in supporting the underprivileged. He emphasized the importance of NGOs acting as “good neighbors” to those in need within their communities.
The PBO Authority pledged to collaborate with stakeholders to implement the new legal framework and provide policy guidance to NGOs. This includes aligning their programs with Kenya’s national development plan and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.
The launch of the report and NGOs Week 2024 highlight the significant contribution of NGOs to Kenya’s economy and social well-being. Moving forward, collaboration, transparency, and adherence to regulations will be crucial in ensuring the sector’s continued positive impact.
