Ragana Girls Secondary School in Suna West was closed indefinitely on Monday, July 15, following a declaration by the Board of Management.
The closure comes amid serious concerns about the lack of clean water and the deteriorating state of dormitories.
Students reported using dirty water from a pond on the school grounds, raising health concerns. Additionally, complaints about the poor condition of the dormitories forced the board to conclude that the environment was unconducive for learning.
As a result, the school’s 400 students were sent home until the issues are resolved. The abrupt closure has left students in limbo, missing out on the ongoing second term. Prior to the announcement, some students staged protests, carrying placards demanding the principal’s resignation.
The school management has been advised to address the problems promptly to ensure students can resume their education soon. A concerned parent emphasized the need for immediate action, noting, “If we just leave it as it is and the students come back, it will bring a lot of complications. We must know how to tame them and make them listen.”
Students were seen leaving the school with their suitcases shortly after the closure was announced.
The closure of Ragana Girls came just hours after Kerugoya Boys High School in Kirinyaga County was also closed indefinitely due to a dormitory fire on Saturday night. The fire disrupted evening preps, though no injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire, with County Commissioner Hussein Alosow urging patience and avoiding speculation.
