Dormitories in two schools in Kirinyaga County were set ablaze on Tuesday night as part of a wave of unrest that has hit learning institutions in the region.
Separate fires broke out at Kiamatugu Boys High School and St. Mary’s Kagio Boys High School, leading authorities to preliminarily believe rogue students were behind the incidents. Media reports indicate that three dormitories were destroyed in the fires.
At Kiamatugu Boys, two dormitories were burned down, causing extensive property damage. At Kagio Boys, one dormitory was set ablaze. Fortunately, there were no injuries or fatalities reported in either incident.
These incidents are part of a larger pattern of unrest in the county. On Saturday evening, a dormitory at Kerugoya Boys High School went up in flames in a suspected arson attack.
The fire started at 8 p.m., but the fire department was able to extinguish it before it spread. No injuries or casualties were reported, but the school was closed indefinitely.
Additionally, Kagia Boys High School experienced a dormitory fire recently.
In response to these events, school principals in Kirinyaga County held a meeting on Tuesday to address the growing unrest.
Sabina Aroni, the Central Region Director of Education, indicated that while no one has been officially implicated, investigations suggest the potential involvement of a teacher in some cases.
The situation remains under investigation as authorities work to restore order and ensure the safety of students and staff in the affected schools.
