The Ministry of Education assured Kenyans on Sunday that higher education remains affordable despite recent controversies over increased university fees.

Higher Education Principal Secretary Beatrice Muganda Inyangala announced that the new university model will provide students with annual upkeep ranging from Ksh 40,000 to Ksh 60,000, based on individual needs.

Inyangala explained that students from well-off families will receive Ksh 40,000 for personal upkeep, with the government covering 60% of their education expenses.

Those from vulnerable backgrounds will get Ksh60,000, while the government will finance 95% of their undergraduate studies. Extremely needy students will benefit from Ksh55,000 in upkeep and 90% government funding.

For students categorized as needy or less needy, upkeep will range between Ksh 45,000 and Ksh50,000, with the government covering up to 80% of their education costs. This upkeep, intended for personal expenses, will be provided as a loan to be repaid after graduation.

PS Inyangala stated that the specific household contribution required from students would be communicated by August 5. The Ministry has developed several variables, such as income levels and family circumstances, to determine the exact contribution.

President William Ruto previously emphasized that parental contributions are essential for the sustainability of the education system.
