A coalition of ODM leaders in Nairobi has publicly endorsed Makadara MP George Aladwa in his bid to become the next National Assembly Minority Leader, following the nomination of the current officeholder, a position that has become a significant point of contention within the party.
In a show of unity during a press conference held in Nairobi on Sunday, ODM County chair lady Lilian Omogi led a delegation of party officials who emphasized the importance of rewarding loyalty within the party ranks.
They highlighted Aladwa’s dedication and long-standing commitment to the ODM party, citing his willingness to stand firm even during challenging times, including a previous arrest linked to his political activities.
“Nobody can doubt the loyalty of Aladwa when it comes to party matters. He has stood by the party in the county, and his past sacrifices demonstrate his commitment,” said Omogi.
“He is also the most qualified and experienced leader in Nairobi County, having served admirably in various capacities, from Councillor and Deputy Mayor to Mayor and now MP.”
In response to the endorsement, Aladwa expressed confidence in his capabilities to lead the minority troops in the National Assembly. “I have been the chair of the party at the county level and also served as the chair of the chairs drawn from all 47 counties. My experience equips me well for the role, and I am even qualified to be the Party Leader,” Aladwa stated.
The race to succeed the current Minority Leader, John Mbadi Wandayi, has emerged as a competitive landscape, with at least six ODM candidates vying for the position.
Among the notable figures in the contest are Otiende Amolo (Rarieda), Millie Odhiambo (Suba North), Antoney Kibagandi (Kitutu Chache South), Jared Okelo (Nyando), and James Nyikal (Seme). Additionally, Homa Bay Town MP Opondo Kaluma is rumored to be eyeing the influential role, further complicating the selection process.
The position of Minority Leader is vital in the National Assembly, ranking just below the Speaker and Majority Leader, and plays a crucial role in shaping the Opposition’s response to government policies and actions.
The ultimate decision on who will fill Wandayi’s shoes lies with ODM Party Leader Raila Odinga, who is expected to make a final call based on party loyalty, experience, and strategic considerations.
As the discussions intensify, ODM members are acutely aware that this appointment is not just about individual aspirations but also about reinforcing the party’s unity and direction heading into future political contests.
