Kilifi Governor Warns Hotels and KWS Over Harassment of Beach Operators

Kilifi Governor Gideon Mung’aro has issued a stern warning to hotels in Kilifi and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) regarding the alleged harassment of beach operators near hotels in Watamu, Kilifi County.

Reports indicate that KWS officers were being used by hotel management to evict business owners operating nearby.

Beach operators complained that the harassment by KWS officers was preventing them from interacting with tourists, which is essential for their livelihoods.

Governor Mung’aro, addressing the issue over the weekend, vowed to revoke the licenses of any hotels that barred local business owners from operating.

“We cannot arrest our young men guiding tourists. I have talked to hotel managers and we have agreed that all small businesses should belong to the citizens. If any hotel defies this order, I will revoke its license,” Mung’aro stated.

He emphasized that Kilifi welcomes investors who support the development of the county without marginalizing small entrepreneurs.

Governor Mung’aro was accompanied by President William Ruto during his tour of the region. President Ruto also cautioned KWS officers against harassing small traders, emphasizing that KWS is a state institution meant to serve the people.

“I am directing KWS to work with the leaders to resolve the issue,” Ruto stated.

Kilifi, a major tourist destination, is home to attractions such as the Kilifi Festival, Watamu Marine National Park, and the Mnarani Ruins.

The region also boasts luxurious hotels that attract small traders selling goods to tourists.
