The Prime Suspect in Ksh 7.6B Triton Oil Scandal has finally been charged after evading justice for 15 years by running out of the Country to UK where he was extradited from after successful extradition application by the Kenyan Government.
The suspect Yagnesh Mohanlal Devani was finally caught up by the long limb of the law after he was arrested from UK and spending a night in police cells over the Sh7.6 billion oil scandal.
However, it appears he will have a prolonged stay in remand after the Court directed that he be remanded at Industrial police station for extra two weeks to pave way for the court to draft a reasoned ruling on his bail and bond release.
Devani who according to the prosecution has been on the run since 2009 faces economic crime charges over theft of oil worth millions of US Dollars.
Devani was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Thomas Nzyoki by EACC detectives following a warrant of arrest issued in September 2009.
He pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of corruption with prosecution objecting to his release on bail or bond pending the hearing and determination of the case saying he is a flight risk since he fled the jurisdiction of the court for 15 years.
The prosecution said Devani is a man of many means and should the court be inclined to release him on bond, it might be difficult to locate him should he run out of the Country.
The Court ordered the accused person to be detained at Industrial Police station until August 19.
