Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Gen Jeje Odongo, has requested a Shs6 billion (approximately Ksh 208 million) supplementary budget from the House Committee on Foreign Affairs to repair Uganda House in Nairobi.
The six-storey building, located on Kenyatta Avenue, was heavily damaged during anti-tax protests in June.
The appeal for funds comes amidst strained relations between Kenya and Uganda, worsened by the recent arrest and deportation of 36 Ugandans by Kenyan security forces.
Gen Odongo stressed the urgency of the repair, noting that the building’s restoration is essential for both operational needs and boosting Uganda’s Non-Tax Revenue (NTR), which is projected to reach Shs4 billion (about Ksh 138.67 million) once the building is fully functional.
During the June 25 incident, a fire broke out at Uganda House, reportedly forcing 37 attorneys, including prominent city lawyer Danstan Omari, to jump from the fourth floor.
The building was being renovated by Ambitious Construction Company, but the project was disrupted by the fire. The renovation, covered by insurance, faced delays as no detailed insurance report is yet available.
The Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire, indicated that while insurance was secured, a complete report may take up to two years.
Lawmakers, including Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Muwada Nkunyingi, have called for a detailed report on the fire and the financial request.
The committee has decided to inspect the building and review all relevant documents before making any decisions.
