Woman sets house ablaze while husband, 2 children were asleep

Kathaia village is in shock after a woman allegedly set fire to her three-bedroom house following a suspected domestic dispute.

Beatrice Mueni is reported to have ignited the blaze while her husband, Martin Njeru Gicovi, and their two children, aged 12 and 8, were asleep inside.

Gicovi recounted the Sunday, August 11 incident, stating that he was awakened by the smoke and managed to escape through a window with the children.

“I was fast asleep when I smelled something burning. I woke up to find the house on fire. I had to break a window to escape and then went back to save my children,” Gicovi recounted.

Mueni claimed she was outside collecting clothes from the hanging line when the fire started.

She then went to Ena Police Post to report an alleged assault by her husband while neighbours attempted to extinguish the flames.

However, angry neighbours followed her to the police station, demanding an explanation for the incident, which led to her arrest.

As tensions rose, Mueni admitted to deliberately starting the fire to destroy her belongings.

The police have since visited the scene, assessed the damage, and launched an investigation into the distressing event.

Gicovi claimed that the damage caused by the fire was approximately KSh 90,000.
