Igoji Boarding Primary School in Meru County suffered a devastating fire on the night of August 12th, 2024.
Property worth millions was destroyed, with early investigations pointing towards a possible land dispute as the cause.
Meru County Commissioner, Jacob Ouma, visited the scene and expressed his concern over the “unacceptable” destruction. He acknowledged the reported land ownership tussle and emphasized the importance of legal solutions: “There are legal means of addressing these squabbles,” he stated.
The fire, which comes just before the opening of the third term, has left many students without dormitories.
Igoji Boarding Primary, established in 1970, faces significant disruption.
Father Lawrence Micheni, the school director, condemned the act as “inhumane” and called for a peaceful resolution.
“The issue of land will be resolved through relevant government agencies,” assured Mr. Ouma. He highlighted the role of the National Land Commission in mediating the dispute. Father Micheni confirmed the Commission’s involvement, suggesting the land is large enough to accommodate multiple institutions.
Investigations into the fire’s cause continue, with authorities determined to hold those responsible accountable.
