Protests demanding justice for a murdered female doctor and increased protection for women have swept across India, intensifying after the brutal rape and killing of the 31-year-old in Kolkata, West Bengal.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has declared a nationwide strike, shutting down non-essential hospital services on Saturday, as doctors demand stronger security measures and safer work environments.
The IMA described the murder as a “barbaric crime” highlighting the lack of safe spaces for women in India.
Emergency services will remain operational during the 24-hour strike. The strike follows the vandalization of the hospital where the crime occurred, further inflaming public outrage.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the act, urging swift punishment for those responsible.
The case, now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has drawn national attention and sparked widespread protests across major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.
In West Bengal, the incident has also fueled political tensions, with the opposition and ruling parties trading blame for the violence.
As protests continue, many hope this tragic event will lead to lasting changes in women’s safety across the country.
