Kenya’s agricultural sector has received a much-needed boost as China commits to expanding its market for Kenyan produce.Â
The announcement came after a pivotal meeting between President William Ruto and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing.
This development is timely, as Kenya’s agricultural exports to China, particularly avocados and tea, have faced recent setbacks.
Despite being granted market access, Kenyan avocado exports to China have plummeted by 80% this year, with exporters favoring more lucrative markets in Europe and North America.
President Xi Jinping assured President Ruto that China’s vast consumer base, with over 1.4 billion people, remains open to Kenyan agricultural products.
This commitment is seen as a significant opportunity to balance Kenya’s trade with the world’s second-largest economy, currently dominated by mineral exports.
Beyond agriculture, discussions between the two leaders also touched on regional infrastructure projects, including the expansion of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Rironi-Mau Summit-Malaba dual carriageway, which are expected to further bolster Kenya’s economic development.
As Kenya looks to capitalize on this renewed partnership, the focus will be on strengthening agricultural exports to China’s expansive market.
