Netanyahu Defends Israeli Troops’ Presence on Gaza-Egypt Border

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reiterated his stance that Israeli forces will not withdraw from the Philadelphi Corridor, a key buffer zone along Gaza’s southern border with Egypt.

Speaking in Jerusalem, Netanyahu emphasized that troops must remain to prevent weapons smuggling and secure the border, despite ongoing pressure for a ceasefire with Hamas.

While Netanyahu expressed openness to alternatives as part of a potential permanent ceasefire, he remained skeptical about their feasibility. “I don’t see that happening,” he said, reaffirming the importance of the troops’ presence for Israel’s security.

He stressed that the border cannot be “perforated” under any deal and that any proposals must offer tangible proof of security.

Hamas, in response, accused Netanyahu of stalling ceasefire efforts.

Thousands of protesters in Israel have also criticized the prime minister, demanding he prioritize securing the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Despite reported internal disagreements with his defense chiefs, Netanyahu remains firm, calling further concessions “illogical” and “insane.”

He maintains that Israel’s security is paramount and continues to face international pressure as negotiations, led by the U.S. President Joe Biden, attempt to establish a ceasefire agreement.
