Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki announced today that investigations into the cause of the fire are progressing vigorously, with authorities working relentlessly to gather crucial information and ensure accountability.
At Naro Moru Level 4 Hospital, the process of DNA matching is set to begin after the completion of post-mortem examinations on the remains of the pupils who perished in the devastating blaze.
The fire occurred in the boys’ dormitory of the school, where 164 boys were residing at the time.
Tragically, 21 boys lost their lives in the incident, while 143 survivors have been accounted for, including 140 who have been reunited with their families and three who remain hospitalized.
In the wake of this disaster, the government has provided a comprehensive accounting of the school’s enrollment, which was 843 students, with 330 boarding on campus at the time of the tragedy. The announcement has offered some reassurance to families amid the chaos and despair.
CS Kindiki commended the collaborative efforts of various agencies, including the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), forensic teams, the Government Chemist Department, the Kenya Red Cross, and the Nyeri County Government. He praised the seamless coordination among these entities, emphasizing their dedication to responding to this national tragedy.
Once the identification of the deceased is completed, the government has pledged to release the bodies to their respective families for final rites.
