Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has assured Lamu County residents that the government is committed to bolstering security efforts to prevent future terror attacks.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening security, Gachagua stated that the Kenya Kwanza administration has coordinated all security agencies in Lamu to ensure peaceful coexistence among the residents.
“For a long time, Lamu County has been a battleground for terrorists. But those days are over. Going forward, it will not be business as usual. Our security agencies are firmly in control,” he remarked.
Mr. Gachagua was speaking at Muungano Grounds in Mpeketoni, Lamu County, during the burial service of the late Raphael Munyua, the County’s Deputy Governor.
Gachagua emphasized the significance of peace in the resource-rich county, stating that Lamu can only thrive when peace and tranquility prevail.
“Security is paramount here. Lamu is a key county, rich in resources like the blue economy. I urge all communities to foster unity and build stronger ties for the sake of communal harmony,” he added.
In response to former Lamu Woman Representative Shakilla Mohammed’s request to remove sniffer dogs at roadblocks due to inconvenience to residents, Gachagua stated that this would not be possible, as it would compromise security.
“I acknowledge Ms. Abdallah’s request, but removing sniffer dogs at roadblocks is not an option. Let’s allow our officers to do their job. These dogs play a critical role in detecting explosives,” he reiterated.
Gachagua also praised the security officers and National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) for their effective coordination during operations, ensuring more attacks are thwarted. He assured them of continued government support.
“I commend the NGAOs for maintaining peace in the county. Since the President met with local leaders and Lamu’s administration, things have improved. Keep up the good work,” Gachagua encouraged.
Addressing concerns about the county’s dilapidated infrastructure, Gachagua pledged the national government’s commitment to constructing several rural roads, including the long-stalled Mpeketoni-Mkunumbi Road.
Gachagua was accompanied by various leaders, including Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir, Principal Secretary for Investment Abubakar Hassan, Lamu Senator Joseph Githuku, and several others.
