Russian forces launched a wave of airstrikes on the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, targeting a residential building and killing at least three people, local officials reported.
The attack, conducted using guided glide bombs on Tuesday, injured 31 others and hit four districts across the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes, saying, “The targets for Russian bombs are a residential building, a bakery, a stadium… the ordinary life of ordinary people.”
He is currently in New York for the UN General Assembly, where he called on global allies to “stop the terror” and reaffirmed Ukraine’s need for continued US military aid.
Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekov, revealed that the apartment block struck on Tuesday had previously been damaged at the start of the war but was recently repaired and prepared for winter.
“The enemy hit it a second time with a KAB [glide bomb],” he said.
Russia has increasingly used Soviet-era glide bombs, which are inexpensive and destructive.
The bombs have been instrumental in Russia’s efforts to capture more territory in Ukraine, as fighting escalates in the eastern part of the country.
Russian forces are now closing in on the town of Vuhledar as the conflict rages on.
