Major Highways to Close for Africa Road Cycling Championships

Next week, several major highways, including the Nairobi-Nakuru and Malaba roads, will close for five days to accommodate the Africa Road Cycling Championships.

The event will draw top cyclists from across the continent, creating significant disruptions for motorists.

Eldoret, which recently achieved city status, is expected to face the heaviest traffic as key routes are closed and traffic is rerouted.

Motorists have been urged to use alternative routes, especially those travelling to or from Eldoret.

The Southern Bypass between Cheplaskei and Maili Tisa has been designated as the primary diversion along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The championship will kick off on Wednesday with time trials, with roads closed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and continue through to Sunday, concluding with the elite men’s road race.

Local authorities are advising residents to plan accordingly and anticipate traffic delays.

Organisers hope the event will attract international attention and boost the local economy.

It will also raise Eldoret’s profile as a cycling hub, adding to its reputation for producing world-class athletes.
