Outrage as Tourist Uses Slingshot Near Beloved Hippo Moo Deng

A Chinese tourist has ignited a wave of outrage after being caught on camera using a slingshot to hurl projectiles at animals in a Thai zoo, including the beloved baby hippo Moo Deng.

The shocking incident occurred at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi on October 20, as the holidaymaker was seen brandishing the slingshot, targeting an enclosure close to the two-month-old hippo.

Witness Patcharida Chueakhamhod recorded the bizarre scene, expressing her disbelief at the reckless behavior. “I looked closely and saw she was using a slingshot,” she shared. “I didn’t want to confront them; I was alone and they were in a big group. It felt dangerous.” Other tourists in the group reportedly laughed, seemingly oblivious to the risks posed to both the animals and themselves.

A zookeeper responsible for Moo Deng expressed his shock at the incident. “We only saw the video after it happened and couldn’t intervene at the time,” he said. “We will contact the tour company to ensure they inform future guests about appropriate behavior.” The zookeeper plans to file a report with local authorities as well.

Moo Deng, whose name translates to “bouncy pig,” was born on July 20 and has since become an internet sensation, skyrocketing the zoo’s daily visitor numbers. The pygmy hippopotamus is classified as endangered, with ongoing efforts to protect the species.

As the global call for animal welfare intensifies, this incident highlights the urgent need for increased awareness among tourists about their role in safeguarding wildlife. The Khao Kheow Open Zoo continues to attract crowds eager to see the adorable Moo Deng—let’s hope they remember to respect her habitat while doing so.
