Harambee Stars suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to South Sudan in Juba during the first leg of the qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday afternoon.
The Bright Stars took control in the second half, securing their crucial victory to edge closer to their first-ever appearance in a senior continental tournament.
Ezbon Malish of Jamus FC ignited South Sudan’s hopes by scoring in the 50th minute, capitalizing on a breakdown in the Kenyan defense. His effort was followed by a decisive goal from midfielder Yohanna Juba in the 68th minute, effectively sealing the win for the hosts.
Although Kenya is guaranteed a spot in the tournament as one of the three host nations, the team is using these qualifiers as an opportunity to build a competitive squad.
The return leg, set for next Sunday in Kampala, presents South Sudan with the chance to advance—requiring only a draw to secure their place in the next round against either Djibouti or Rwanda.
In a surprising twist, Djibouti managed to defeat Rwanda 1-0 in their own first leg qualifier, making the upcoming matches even more critical for all involved teams.
