Sheila Chepkirui claimed her first World Marathon Major title at the 2024 New York City Marathon, finishing in an impressive two hours, 24 minutes, and 35 seconds.
In a historic moment for Kenyan athletics, Chepkirui led a clean sweep on the podium, finishing ahead of renowned runners Hellen Obiri and Vivian Cheruiyot.
Chepkirui, who previously finished sixth at the London Marathon this year, outpaced defending champion Obiri in a thrilling sprint finish during the final kilometers of the race.
Obiri crossed the line in a commendable two hours, 24 minutes, and 49 seconds, while Cheruiyot secured third place in two hours, 25 minutes, and 21 seconds.
The race kicked off with a competitive start, as a pack of 14 elite athletes tackled the first five kilometers in 18:18 minutes, led by American Des Linden.
Chepkirui, Obiri, and Cheruiyot stayed within the lead group throughout the race, navigating challenging conditions as they approached the halfway mark.
As the marathon progressed, the competition intensified. With ten kilometers remaining, Cheruiyot briefly pulled ahead, but the battle ultimately narrowed down to Chepkirui and Obiri in a fierce race to the finish.
As they reached the 40-kilometer mark, both athletes were shoulder-to-shoulder, with Cheruiyot trailing closely behind.
Chepkirui’s victory not only earned her $100,000 in prize money but also established her firmly on the international marathon stage.
Obiri and Cheruiyot received $60,000 and $40,000, respectively, showcasing the significant talent and determination of Kenyan women in long-distance running.
