Opposition leader Raila Odinga has aimed sharp criticisms at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in the wake of Gachagua’s recent impeachment, reigniting a long-standing political rivalry.
Speaking at a political rally in Vihiga on Sunday, Odinga ridiculed Gachagua’s claims of setting traps at State House to thwart his access to President William Ruto.
Gachagua had previously boasted about establishing “traps” to ensure that Odinga could not infiltrate the government.
“Nimepanga hiyo Ikulu, nimeieweka mitego kila corner,” he declared in a past address, suggesting that he was safeguarding the administration from his political adversaries.
In a pointed rebuttal, Odinga dismissed Gachagua’s rhetoric, mocking him for being out of touch.
“Mtego ya aina gani? Ati aliwekea baba mtego… Akowapi sasa Gachagua?” he jabbed, implying that Gachagua’s traps had only served to backfire.
Gachagua’s earlier remarks have drawn ridicule not only from Odinga but also from various political circles, including President Ruto.
In an attempt to mitigate the fallout, Gachagua later claimed he had removed the traps after witnessing Ruto’s renewed camaraderie with Odinga, characterizing their meeting in Uganda as a “cheerful reunion.”
“My traps were working very well… but I decided to observe from a distance,” he noted, emphasizing his role in preventing potential political alliances.
