A daring robbery attempt along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass was thwarted on Thursday, thanks to quick intervention by police patrol teams.
The suspect, identified as Martin Otieno, was apprehended following a dramatic chase into a nearby thicket.
The arrest comes amid heightened police patrols in response to a series of robbery incidents reported on the notorious stretch of road.
Spearheaded by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer and supported by DCI Lang’ata and DCI Dagoretti, the intensified operations aim to restore safety for motorists.
Otieno’s modus operandi involved strategically placing a massive stone on the road to obstruct traffic, forcing vehicles to stop and creating opportunities for theft. His latest attempt unfolded tragically for one unsuspecting family traveling in a Volkswagen (Registration: KYW 690).
According to police, the family was driving toward Ngong Road when their car hit the stone, triggering a loud crash that caught the attention of nearby patrol officers. Emerging from a thicket, Otieno confronted the family and robbed them of their valuables.
However, his escape was short-lived. The officers responded swiftly, pursuing Otieno into the bushes and apprehending him moments later. The stolen items were recovered, and no injuries were reported.
Otieno is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned on Monday, January 6, 2025, to face charges of robbery with violence.
Authorities have urged motorists to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity as the crackdown on highway robberies continues.
Crime Watch: The Southern Bypass has become a hotspot for opportunistic crime in recent months, prompting calls for sustained security measures. Police have assured the public that patrols will remain active to ensure motorists’ safety.
