Kitui County Launches ‘Pro-Poor’ Fees Support For Over 9,400 Learners

Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe on Friday officially launched the FY2024/2025 Pro Poor Fees Support Programme, an ambitious initiative set to provide financial support to 9,433 learners from economically disadvantaged backgrounds across the county.

The program, which spans all levels of education, will benefit students in universities, tertiary institutions, vocational training centers (VTCs), technical vocational colleges, secondary schools, and learners with special needs.

Speaking during the launch, Governor Malombe emphasized the vital role of education in driving the socioeconomic development of Kitui County.

“Education is a fundamental human right and a key tool for reducing poverty, promoting gender equality, and fostering peace,” said Dr. Malombe. “This initiative is part of our deliberate efforts to prioritize education and improve its standards in Kitui.”

The Governor highlighted that the program aligns with his administration’s focus on enhancing educational opportunities for vulnerable learners. He also underscored his collaboration with the national government to address the challenges in the education sector.

“Investing in education is not just about funding,” he noted. “It is about nurturing leaders, innovators, and thinkers who will transform our county and beyond.”

Dr. Malombe urged the youth to seize opportunities in vocational training centers, where they can acquire skills critical for the job market and self-employment. He further assured the public of his government’s commitment to infrastructural development as a means of creating a conducive learning environment.

Members of the Kitui County Assembly who attended the launch pledged their support for the initiative, commending the Governor’s dedication to improving education.

This program is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on struggling families while empowering learners to reach their full potential. By prioritizing education, the county government aims to foster a brighter future for Kitui’s youth and the broader community.
