Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has revealed that over 300 companies, including global luxury brands like Gucci, have expressed interest in establishing operations at the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park in Mavoko, Machakos County.
Speaking at his official Karen Residence during a consultative forum with Isiolo County leaders, Kindiki said the industrial park will specialize in processing hides and skins into premium leather goods such as shoes, bags, and accessories. He emphasized that the initiative is expected to significantly boost Kenya’s economy.
“Industries that use leather to make products are now angling to set up shop in Kenanie. We have over 300 applicants, including top-notch global leather companies like Gucci, which make designer bags… they want to come and set up there. That is how you transform a country,” Kindiki stated.
Major Boost for Kenya’s Leather Industry
According to the Deputy President, the completion of the Kenanie Leather Industrial Park could increase the leather sector’s contribution to Kenya’s economy from Ksh. 10 billion to Ksh. 150 billion annually.
He underscored the importance of industrialization in economic transformation, adding that the country’s focus should be on resource utilization and wealth distribution rather than hate, division, and tribalism.
“You develop a country by transforming the resources that God has given us into wealth and distributing it to many people, especially those at the bottom of the pyramid,” Kindiki remarked.
If the plans materialize, Kenya will position itself as a key player in the global leather industry, attracting renowned manufacturers and boosting employment opportunities.
Gucci currently manufactures its products in Italy, France, and Spain, making its potential interest in Kenya’s industrial park a major win for the country’s manufacturing sector.
