The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has urged transporters along the Northern Corridor to strictly adhere to axle load regulations, following a significant reduction in violations due to the successful implementation of its High-Speed Weigh-in-Motion technology.
This digital system has proven effective at monitoring and enforcing axle load limits, resulting in safer roads and less infrastructure damage.
Speaking at the Webuye Weighbridge, KeNHA Cluster Manager Paul Mwirigi emphasised the new technology’s positive impact on reducing overloading. ““The introduction of the Weigh-in-Motion system has been instrumental in reducing overloading cases. We urge all transporters to comply with the set axle load limits to maintain our roads and enhance safety for all users.”,” Mr. Mwirigi said.
He urged all transporters to follow the axle load limits, emphasizing that doing so is critical for road maintenance and the safety of all road users.
Mwirigi also addressed the issue of liftable axles, warning drivers against tampering with them in order to avoid weight limits. He warned that such actions not only harm the road network but also pose serious safety risks.
The KeNHA official also praised the cooperation between the authority and county governments, which has been critical in enforcing axle load regulations. This collaboration, he stated, has contributed to a high rate of compliance and protection of the country’s road infrastructure.
Transporters were reminded that failure to follow axle load regulations could result in significant fines or imprisonment. KeNHA continues to emphasise the importance of adhering to these regulations to ensure the safety, longevity, and integrity of the country’s road networks.
