Orengo — Azimio MPs Must Reclaim Their Majority, 2022 Elections

Siaya — Orengo, Wanjigi call on Azimio MPs to assert their position

Azimio coalition leaders have called on their members in Parliament to reclaim the majority position following a High Court ruling that overturned National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula’s 2022 decision, which had declared President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition as the majority.

The February 7, 2025 ruling reaffirmed Azimio’s numerical superiority in Parliament, a development that Siaya Governor James Orengo says casts doubt on the legitimacy of the 2022 presidential election results.

“What the High Court said is a confirmation that the election results announced in the last elections were not correct. Raila’s party and coalition could not have gotten the majority of seats and lost the presidential election, Orengo remarked during a burial ceremony in Siaya on Saturday.

Orengo urged ODM, the leading party in Azimio, to stand firm and demand what he termed as their rightful position in Parliament. He cautioned against negotiating with Kenya Kwanza, emphasizing that the court had validated Azimio’s majority status.

“I am asking my party, ODM, don’t lose the court declaration that Azimio is the majority in Parliament. Instead of sitting at the table with whoever is in power, take what belongs to you,” he stated.

Safina Party leader Jimmy Wanjigi went a step further, arguing that Azimio MPs now have the numbers to initiate President Ruto’s impeachment. He challenged them to act swiftly, suggesting that failure to do so by March 2025 would prompt a new strategy.

Meanwhile, Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti used the platform to rally support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2027 presidential bid, urging the Luo community to back him.

The court ruling is expected to ignite fresh political tensions as Azimio moves to reclaim its influence in Parliament.
