China has pledged support for Kenyan development plans, as more than 35,000 people face job losses as a result of President Donald Trump’s aid freeze.
Speaking at the Chinese embassy in Nairobi, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Haiyan stated that the world’s future must be defined by all nations and people, not by a single power.
She pointed out that China and Africa are home to 2.8 billion people, creating a massive market for trade between the two regions.
“We will remain steadfast in mutual respect and equality, support each other in pursuing development paths suited to respective national conditions and jointly advance an equal and orderly multipolar world and universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization,” ambassador Haiyan said.
She spoke during the Xinhua’s News Photo Exhibition dubbed “Lens of Xinhua: Images of the Century” co-hosted by the Xinhua News Agency and the Chinese Embassy.
This is key for Kenya’s development.
The Trump administration’s aid freeze has resulted in the layoff of over 35,000 Kenyan workers and the closure of 150 clinics, following the US Agency for International Development’s 90-day suspension.
This has impacted 72,000 HIV patients who rely on donor funds for critical medication, according to Faith Ndungu, an advocacy manager at Hennet.
