Mudavadi Meets Ambassador Ahead of Dutch Royals Visit— Commits To Uphold Human Rights

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi met with Ambassador Wim Geerts, the Human Rights Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, during Geerts’ visit to Kenya.

The discussions centered on Kenya’s upcoming tenure on the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) for the 2025–2027 term, which is set to commence on January 1, 2025.

Kenya was elected to the 47-member UNHRC on October 9, 2024, during elections held by the UN General Assembly in New York.

This election underscores Kenya’s commitment to advancing and protecting human rights on both national and international stages.

During the meeting, Prime CS Mudavadi emphasized Kenya’s dedication to upholding human rights, guided by the nation’s Constitution and international law.

“Human rights are also central to Dutch foreign policy, and Kenya looks forward to collaborating with the Netherlands, especially in supporting human rights defenders and advancing equal rights for all.” Mudavadi tweeted.

Ambassador Geerts acknowledged the centrality of human rights in Dutch foreign policy and expressed the Netherlands’ readiness to collaborate with Kenya.

“Valuable discussions with representatives of Kenyan civil society and human rights defenders as well as with Kenyan authorities, including PCS Mudavadi, about the human rights situation in Kenya. Raised NL concerns and discussed opportunities for cooperation”

The partnership aims to support human rights defenders and promote equal rights for all individuals.

This visit by Ambassador Geerts precedes the planned state visit by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands to Kenya in March 2025.

The royal visit aims to further strengthen bilateral relations and address shared concerns, including human rights issues.
