High Court Greenlights Privatisation of 4 Sugar Milling Companies

Milimani High Court in Nairobi has given the Executive greenlight to proceed with the privatization of four sugar companies.

This comes after the Court dismissed a petition challenging the government’s decision to lease four public sugar factories to private companies.

In the case filed in 2024 the petitioner, Martin Nyongesa Baraza, had argued that there was no public participation and that the farmers were not involved in deciding whether or not to lease the public sugar companies.

However, Justice Chacha Mwita in his ruling said that there was public participation in the decision-making process to privatise the firms contrary to what the petitioner alleged in his petition.

The sugar companies in the process of being privatized include Nzoia Sugar Company Limited, Chemelil Sugar Company Limited, Muhoroni Sugar Company Limited and South Nyanza Sugar Company Limited.
