Boda boda operators across Kenya have warned of nationwide demonstrations if Parliament does not dismiss the Public Transport (Motorcycle Regulations) Bill, sponsored by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale.Â
In a press statement on Tuesday, March 4, Kevin Mubadi, the Chairperson of the Boda Boda Association of Kenya (BAK), accused Khalwale of attempting to sabotage the sector, despite its significant economic contributions.
Mubadi expressed concerns that the Bill, which seeks to impose additional levies on operators, would severely impact their livelihoods.
He called for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed legislation and a written confirmation of its retraction.
“If we do not see any action by Friday, we will proceed with nationwide protests to protect our jobs,” Mubadi stated.
The proposed Bill aims to regulate the boda boda sector by requiring registration of operations with county governments, mandatory employment contracts for operators, and installation of tracking devices on motorcycles.
Khalwale argued that the legislation would reduce road fatalities and bring order to the sector, which has been criticized for violating traffic rules.
However, following backlash from boda boda riders, Khalwale recently hinted at withdrawing the Bill, stating it was intended to protect the youth from preventable accidents. The operators, however, remain adamant in their opposition.
