Safaricom has announced that it will carry out scheduled maintenance on its M-Pesa platform in the early hours of Monday, March 24.
The maintenance will take place between 1:00 a.m. and 1:30 a.m., during which M-Pesa services will experience intermittent disruptions.
In a notice to customers, Safaricom assured that all other services — including calls, data, and SMS — will remain fully operational throughout the maintenance window.
The company explained that the planned system upgrade is part of ongoing efforts to enhance service quality and meet growing customer expectations.
“We are continuously innovating to deliver reliable, safe, secure, and superior customer experiences,” Safaricom said, adding that the maintenance has been strategically planned for off-peak hours to minimize inconvenience.
The company also apologized for any potential disruption and expressed gratitude for its customers’ continued trust and support.
M-Pesa is celebrating its 18th anniversary this year, having launched on March 6, 2007. Originally designed as a domestic mobile money transfer service to provide financial access to millions of unbanked Kenyans, M-Pesa has since evolved into a major financial platform with a global footprint.
Despite early skepticism, M-Pesa quickly gained popularity thanks to its simplicity and convenience. Just one month after its launch, the platform had over 19,000 active users — a number that skyrocketed to more than 1 million by November of the same year.
Today, M-Pesa stands as a billion-dollar business with more than 34 million active users transacting regularly, according to Safaricom’s CEO.
