Former Chief Justice David Maraga has announced that he will be on the ballot in the 2027 presidential election, setting the stage for a political showdown.
Speaking after a church service in Kisii, Maraga declared his readiness to take up the top job, emphasizing that his candidacy is not influenced by external forces.
“At the end of the day, it is the people who will decide. Just relax, wait, and in due course, you will make up your mind whether or not I’m a state project,” Maraga stated.
His entry into the race comes amid discussions within the Kisii political landscape, where Senator Richard Onyonka and other leaders have endorsed former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as the region’s preferred candidate.
“We have decided to set up our own political party. Our candidate, who will negotiate on behalf of the community, is none other than Fred Matiang’i,” Onyonka declared.
Maraga, however, appears to have gained support from Gen Z, who have urged him to run. Speaking after a public lecture at Rongo University, he revealed ongoing consultations with stakeholders.
Why ‘Gen Z’ Want David Maraga for President
Former Chief Justice David Maraga’s entry into the 2027 presidential race has sparked excitement, particularly among Kenya’s Gen Z.
Though he lacks traditional political experience, his tenure as Chief Justice (2016-2021) showcased bold leadership, integrity, and a commitment to justice—qualities that resonate with a generation eager for change.
Maraga is best remembered for his historic annulment of the 2017 presidential election, proving he could stand up to powerful political forces.
His unwavering stance on judicial independence and anti-corruption efforts has earned him admiration from young Kenyans frustrated by years of government mismanagement.
Gen Z, disillusioned with traditional politicians, sees Maraga as a fresh, principled alternative who isn’t part of Kenya’s old political elite. His strong moral values, reinforced by his Christian faith, make him stand out in a political landscape tainted by scandals.
However, transitioning from the Judiciary to politics won’t be easy. Maraga will need to build political alliances, mobilize grassroots support, and craft a compelling campaign strategy to take on established figures like President Ruto and opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka.
